One thing we’ve learned over the years is that moving is a perfect opportunity to do the 3 Ds; declutter, downsize, and dispose. In today’s lingo it’s called “simplify”.
Even though the homes at Starhaven Villas are a sufficient size to keep all those treasures that have been guarded in boxes for years, why not start your new life more simplified?
Here are a few ideas of short projects to jumpstart the process:
- The fridge door. If there’s anything that has been on your fridge for six months or more, file it, take a picture of it, or just throw it out. Now the trick is to keep the space vacant, don’t replace the newly cleared space with other items.
- The medicine cabinet. When was the last time you looked at the expiration date on each of the medicines on hand? You’d be surprised how many are past their expiration date. Take the time to throw out all expired meds and those that were used temporarily and are no longer needed.
- The bedside table. These are notorious for holding onto things like used tissues, rubber bands, hair pins, worn out bookmarks, reminder notes, and a plethora of other unnecessary things. Get a trash can and let the purging begin!
- The kitchen junk drawer. The graveyard of miscellaneous items. This could be a fun project to have a helper, like a grandchild, assist you with. They may find a few treasures they’d like to keep.
Once you have the momentum from these small projects, it will be easy to keep working your way through your house and when you’re finished…CELEBRATE!!
